Saalfeld - City of the Fairy Grottoes
Fairy Grottoes – a Thuringian marvel deep in the mountains
Surrounded by the mountains of the Thueringer Forest, the city at the Saale river impresses with numerous historical buildings from its over 1100-year history. Many historical buildings like the castle ruin "Hoher Schwarm", the Franciscan monastery - now the Thueringan local history museum, the Johannis Church and the market place with its Renaissance city hall built around 1537, remain to this day at the centre of the city.
The main tourist attraction is, however, the Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes, the most colourful grottoes of the world with approximately 200,000 visitors annually.
Being "the most colourful grotto of the world", the "city of the fairy grottoes" is well-known far beyond the borders of Germany.
